The issue is not Ultrawide-monitor specific. Happens also with my 27' Acer Predator that worked just fine with El Capitan and older macOS. Very annoying as I use the MacBook for work and development. I did not get the 2560x1440p resolution when holding down the option-key. And no mater what other resolution I choose, the screen itself is very small in the middle, with black bars around, does not scale one bit. So two problems after upgrading to Sierra: 1) Cannot choose proper resolution (2560x1440) 2) Does not scale at all (no mater the resolution) Created a bug-report with Apple, but still no reply.

C'mon Apple, our eyes are bleeding here. I found a way to fix this for my monitor!!

So everyone's using SwitchResX ($16), but I found that since my monitor supports a DisplayPort connection, I switched from HDMI to DP using this ($9). The problem is gone, and I'm back to being able to use my monitor. I know this can't help anyone without an HDMI alternative, but it seems like Apple just dropped support for native resolution on high-res monitors over HDMI.

For those who want a quick primer on display ports: (updated video link to a newer video) P.S. I just found that some minor input lag when watching high-res video full screen is no longer present after switching away from HDMI. Apple Footer. I am looking into getting a 34' ultrawide and one of my biggest asks is that input source switching is as easy and efficient as possible between my work computer (Mac) and personal gaming setup (PC). I went to the local Fry's and was set on getting the LG 34UC97, but realized it takes multiple steps to switch inputs in a cumbersome menu interface (at least 7 steps to do so).

This bothers me. I haven't been able to sample any other monitor first-hand yet, so I'm relying on Youtube and online reviews and so far the Dell U3415W seems easiest with the buttons on the front of the display. I think that requires only 2 or 3 steps to switch sources? Anyway, I have some basic questions in my quest to ascend:. Are there any other monitors that can switch sources in just one step or two steps?. Since I'm switching between a Mac and PC, will switching input sources keep my peripherals working for both (mouse, keyboard, speakers) computers?

I'm currently using wireless keyboard/mouse, USB speakers. Also, since I will primarily be on the Mac, will the LG's with thunderbolt be the best option?. I've that on certain monitors, when switching inputs the computer that is switched off thinks the monitor is no longer connected, thus moving or collapsing all active window frames. Is this a concern? Ideally, I'd want a monitor that keeps all my screen exactly the same as I last left it, when switching between Mac/PC. Thanks in advance. I have the 34UC98 from LG.

I bought it specifically because it had Thunderbolt. So right now I have the DisplayPort from my Mac Mini and the USB going into the monitor. I leave the Thunderbolt off to the side. When I come home from work I plug in the Thunderbolt to my work laptop (Retina MBP) and switch over. I can't speak to the 34UC97, but on the 98 it takes about four moves of the joystick to get between inputs. I have the U3415W at work and it takes more work (to me) to move inputs on that monitor. I have the U3415W and had the 34UM95 for a month.

The Dell does have 2 menu buttons you can customize. So if you have 2 different inputs you can have one for each input and switching ends up being 2 clicks, once to bring up the menu then once to select the input.

I'd still go with one of the LG'S for the thunderbolt. The Dell is a great monitor and has more features than the LG but for KVM functionality it has 2 USB up cords whereas with the LG you'd be able to do everything (peripherals, data, video) through the thunderbolt cable. Yeah your right about the switching.

All i'm saying is with the dell you will need 2 separate cables running from the laptop to the monitor: a cable for video and a usb cable for peripherals. With thunderbolt, the usb and video cable are combined so its just one cable from the monitor to the laptop. Even so, on second thought btw, you might be better off with the dell. I dont know anything about the LG model your looking at, but the one I had (34UM95) could only get a full resolution and refresh rate on 2 of the 4 inputs because the HDMI was 1.4, kinda pointless IMO. The Dell has HDMI 2.0 and 2 display ports so any of the inputs will work at full resolution. I had the LG 34UM94-P and was using my iMac as my main computer and my PC for gaming.

My iMac doesn't have thunderbolt so I had to use the Displayport and the HDMI for PC. This combination actually worked when switching inputs and didn't lose connection (iMac still recognized the monitor when I was on HDMI). Although I never tried it (I use synergy), it also supposedly has the KVM functionality when switching sources. Switching sources requires about 4-5 button presses. I recently switched up to the Dell U3415W and now have my iMac and PC plugged into the displayport and mini displayport. Now when I switch inputs, the iMac doesn't recognize the monitor.

I haven't tried with using HDMI, but I've been looking for an adapter that works well with my iMac to get full resolution and 50hz. Switching sources requires two taps. My iMac does get full resolution using mini displayport. However, I wanted to use HDMI with the iMac to see if it worked like the LG. But that requires a mini displayport to HDMI adapter and I have yet to find one that can get the 50hz to the HDMI port. It might be a combination of a mini displayport to 4K HDMI adapter with a HDMI 2.0 cable to get it to work. As for keyboard/mouse, as mentioned from, the Dell has the 2 upstream usb3 ports, You'll have to get another cable to plug into the other computer for that feature, I assume.

Your use case seems to be almost exactly like mine(mid'11 MacMini for work, PC for play). I have the Dell U3415W, and here's my input: 'Since I'm switching between a Mac and PC, will switching input sources keep my peripherals working for both (mouse, keyboard, speakers) computers? I'm currently using wireless keyboard/mouse, USB speakers.' I have not put speakers or 1/8' jack headphones to it so far, since I primarily use a usb headset. 'Also, since I will primarily be on the Mac, will the LG's with thunderbolt be the best option?' Not necessarily.

If you want multiple monitors, you cannot daisy chain them(Display Port MST) from the Mac. Apple disables MST over DisplayPort, making it ONLY work for legit thunderbolt connections(Despite being part of the DP 1.2 standard they say it supports). My understanding was that it only worked with apple displays. Curious if anyone knows if the LG has the TB out, or the KVM capability? 'I've read in a few places that on certain monitors, when switching inputs the computer that is switched off thinks the monitor is no longer connected, thus moving or collapsing all active window frames. Is this a concern? Ideally, I'd want a monitor that keeps all my screen exactly the same as I last left it, when switching between Mac/PC.

' - I have not noticed this happening with mine. Though I can see it being wonky if there were multiple screens involved. Gaming on the screen is pretty good.

I honestly thought I'd be more enamored by the extra screen realestate. After the first few minutes, the novelty wears off. The resolution is easier to drive than 4k, but not as easy as 1080p. I have a 980ti and it runs most current AAA titles I've put it against(witcher3, gtav, justcause3) at about 60fps, give or take. Only drops i notice are cpu-related due to a bunch of stuff happening on screen(explosions, lots of enemies, etc). I have a MBP around here somewhere(wifes).

I'll test with it to see what it does. For the KVM on the dell: You plug the dp cables from each computer into two of the dp inputs. You plug one usb upstream cable into each of the computers, and into the ports on the monitor.

In the OSD, you assign one of the usb upstreams to be paired with one of the DP inputs, then like wise with the other with the other dp input. Then plug your wireless KB/M into the usb ports on the back of the monitor. Now when you switch inputs from one dp input to the other, the monitor automatically switches which usb upstream it sends the kb/m dongle signals over. It takes a second for it to take effect, but only because the OS has to recognize the kb/m like you just plugged it in. I will say that USB audio is flaky in windows.

When you switch over to the mac, windows will automatically reset to its normal output. When you switch back to Windows, you have to go into the playback devices and reassign it to the USB. It may just be that I am not doing the playback devices settings right, for it to be set as default.

And no, it does not sound like you need thunderbolt.
