Have checked and the master/slave settings are fine. As I said, this all worked before and I have not made any hardware changes, and I am convinced I have not made any software changes apart form the automatic windows updates. I would be unsure which restore point to revert to, so it might be a case of a complete rebuild if I get no joy. I have seen posts by other people that have experienced the same problem, but no solutions yet. Incredibly frustrating. Guidance appreciated.

Micron tech support suggested connecting either the CD/DVD drive to the primary cable with the HD, which I did and the drive showed up but not the content except after each re-boot. That presumably rules out a problem with the secondary IDE controller. He suggested if that was the case do a install repair. Did that today after a day of making sure everything was backed up. Same problem, but this time XP did recognize that the new HD I installed after the problem started (as a place to back up to) was infact formattted.
